Erosion by Water. Liquid water is the major agent of erosion on Earth. Rain, rivers, floods, lakes, and the ocean carry away bits of soil and sand and slowly wash away the sediment. Rainfall produces four types of soil erosion: splash erosion, sheet erosion, rill erosion, and gully erosion. Gully erosion occurs as water flows down narrow channels after rainstorms and melting snow.

Soil erosion is a key form of soil degradation. This moderately uniform removal of surface soil by the action of rainfall and runoff water is known as sheet erosion. More particles will naturally be washed from a bare soil than from those protected by vegetation. Sheet erosion is the most damaging form of soil erosion by water. Water can be an extremely effective erosional agent, especially when it pours down as rainfall and forms water runoffs along flowing paths.
